Further Background Conclusions

Much of the background on Caeretan hydriae comes from a catalog written by Jaap Hemelrijk, who was the leading expert on this subject, with all the known examples of hydriae from this workshop. As it stands today, the known corpus of Caeretan hydriae is limited to 33 complete and six fragmentary examples. Based on the evidence provided by the current examples, two Ionian masters ran the workshop, the Eagle Painter and the Busiris Painter. The two masters primarily painted the figural scenes, while various Etruscan assistants completed the ornamentation. Sometimes, multiple different assistants worked on a single hydria, and, in one case, the Eagle and Busiris painters worked on the same one as well.
