About the Fall 2023 Interns
Material Transformations is a website dedicated to the conservation efforts of Interns at the University of Maryland Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture.
Lylah Messinger is a Classics and Art History Double Major interested in artifact conservation. She has previous experience from an archaeology dig in Macedonia. She came into the Collaboratory internship with her eyes and thesis set on conserving the Caeretan Hydria. A link to her thesis will be added at the end of Spring 2024 for further information on the process, analysis, and conclusions on the UMD Caeretan hydria.
Jun Lee is a Studio Art Major with prior experience in metalwork, in both steel and bronze. After a look into UMD's Study Collection, they decided to create bronze replicas of an unstudied Northern European Axe-Head.
Amy Christopherson is a History and Art History Double Major, who assisted in both projects and was instrumental in the creation of Material Transformations. She helped Lylah with researching the motif on the Caeretan Hydria and discovered the Hind motif. Amy also helped Jun file the bronze axe heads. She exhibited both projects through the Material Transformations website.
Our projects were done under the supervision of Dr. Quint Gregory, the Director of the Michelle Smith Collaboratory, and Dr. Chris Cloke, the Associate Director of the Collaboratory.
